Before buying: check your staircase and elevator space

Before ordering your divan bed, it's worth checking a detail that is often overlooked: will it fit up your stairs or in your elevator?

In many old buildings in Madrid and Toledo, the elevator is small or doesn't exist at all. Although the divan bed is transported disassembled and in flat pieces (much easier to handle than it seems), it's a good idea to have an idea of the available space, especially on high floors without an elevator.

Some things that help:

• Measure the width of the stairwell at the narrowest landing.
• If there's an elevator, measure its door and interior.
